BBC Article on how to predict the future: related to 78 RPM

Post by russmovaz »

This is very interesting and to me means that the things we here are collecting and saving from oblivion and restoring are exactly the kinds of things the author predicts will survive one hundred years into the future.

He sites: fragility as one important aspect which characterizes individual items in the groups of things that survive. And this fragility of the individual helps the group survive long term, e.g., humans and maybe 78 RPM records, brittle as individuals but robust as a group.

To me, this means that 78 RPM records will outlive 33 ⅓ vinyl or surely CDs -- because 78s are more fragile.

A couple quotes from the article:

"Similarly, while individual artefacts may be fragile, their lineage is likely to continue if they serve and extend deeply-rooted needs. "

"If you want to think about the future in terms of fragility and robustness, you can sketch a kind of equation based on the above. The future is those pieces of the past that have evolved and endured, minus those parts of the present most likely to crack and crumble. "

Audio and video cassettes are already deteriorating. As a precaution I have transferred my favourites to CD and DVD, but no-one yet knows how long these will last before they degrade.
Many of my 78's are well over 100 years old and will certainly outlive me. So should my Blue Amberols, provided that they are properly stored.

It's always baffled me that those Eclipse astrological records were by calendar month, not sign...

Or maybe the baffling thing is that people spend money on such piffle!

Very true. In our hobby, luck is all about being in the right place at the right time, not about reading your horoscope.

From the Pathé demonstration record: "I am a Pathé record, guaranteed to play a thousand times, and with care I will live to speak to your grandchildren when they are as old as you are."

Sometimes predictions do come true!
