Not really the ¼ cut veneer has all been removed and where can you buy it ?

True, it is missing! But i believe this can be made from New veneer... Provided you are able to spend hours of work on this machine, it's not going to cost that much. Working on the machines is part of the enjoyment, isn't it?

Ye you can buy ordinary mahogany veneer BUT where would you buy ¼ ct mahogany veneer , I doubt if it is even produced any more as it is so expensive to make due to the mount of waste , I've looked online and can#'t find any for sale

I don't know what ¼ ct veneer is... Does this refer to the symmetric V shape of the grain? These are made cutting the veneer sheets in half thickness, then placing one half against the other so the grain is perfectly symmetric? I understand.. This must be done when preparing the veneer at the factory, isn't it? Because it will be the last sheet only, isn't it?
One cannot match this unless you have the machinery to cut the thin wood veneer in halves by the thickness... Then match the halves and cut away the surplus triangles.
So it only can be a project for very specific people who can do t that, unless you're decided to ruin the historical part of it and give t the case with normal veneer.
Still, it could be possible to find a thin sheet of veneer that has a very parallel grain, so you could cut diagonally on the plane, and match one half against the other half diagonally... Mmmm...!

I think he's referring to quarter-cut (or quarter sawn) veneer, a method of cutting the veneer across the wood grain as described here:

"The quarter log is mounted in the slicer so that the knife cuts across the growth rings at approximately a right angle and parallel to the rays, resulting in a highly three dimensional ray flake appearance in red and white oak."

Quarter cut veneer has a more attractive or interesting look. For instance quarter cut oak veneer, used on oak Victrolas, has that classic tiger stripe effect.

To attempt to replicate the original, you really need the repeating ribbon effect. The sample shown on the vandykes website looks the best to my eyes, but unless you see the actual pieces you are buying in person, it is probably a crapshoot.
