Brunswick HIDELGO

Post by Rodney »

Is anyone able to provide any information on a Brunswick Model HIDALGO? Unable to find anything on the web - not even a matching image. Thanks for looking.

That's a tough search!
I did manage to pull this information from the internet
It is given a mention in this book...

I do not know if it's pictured or if it has a write-up (on page 370), that's not part of the on-line book sample, but later machines seem to be called a 8-7.

I searched through Wakeman's Brunswick book. There is no mention of the Hidalgo. There is one brief mention of the 8-7, on page 370. Under a section labeled "Brunswick Exponential (Acoustic) Panatrope Models", it is noted that the 8-7 sold for $90. A date of 9/28/1927 is shown as well, probably the date the price was effective.

Couldn't be an 8-7. That was a small upright Consolette clone:

I'm wondering if it might be an export model.

I'm thinking it's an export model of some kind since the OP is in Australia. I've never seen one like it.

Looking at the cabinet, I would date it more 1923-25 versus late 1927.

Hi Rodney,
I did a quick search on Trove- the Australian newspaper archive
and found a couple ads that include pictures of the Hidalgo, but they are of an upright model similar to the ones pictured above.
I have the Madrid which has a similar upper cabinet to yours but mine has turned legs and a stretcher.
Pictures of the Hidalgo below come from 1930 ads but I didn't see it mentioned before that, although I didn't spend a whole lot of time searching advertisements so you might find more information if you search through more.
I seem to remember seeing your model when I was searching for Madrid ads a couple years ago.
I suspect either your ID tag came from a different machine or it may have been mis-tagged at the factory?

Thank you Shane. Yes somebody else came up with a couple of ads on Trove. They are for Musgroves a retailer in Perth and yes the Hidalgo is not the same as mine. I must conclude that the tag is from another model. I will see if I can find a Madrid. Thanks again.
