Victrola VV 8-9 veneer and finish

Post by Bruce_Van_Note »

I'm in the middle of restoring my VV 8-9 and I have some questions about the type of oak veneer and stain finish. Did Victor use white oak or red oak veneer for this phonograph? What kind of stain was used? Can it be found or replicated today?

I'm also restoring an 8-9 and need to restore the finish too. It looks like red oak to me, but that could just be the stain? The Victor announcement for this machine just says "finished in oak veneers. Baronial oak finish" whatever that means. I looked up the term "baronial oak" and it is still used today as a term for oak flooring. Here is a Victorian chair described as being in "baronial oak". It looks like a dark, reddish-toned oak.

Hi Marc! The restoration is coming along well. I'm not planning to repaint the turquoise areas; for the most part, they are in good enough shape. I cleaned the outside with GoJo (non-abrasive) and will begin painting the gold striping. I removed the thin beaten up plywood which covered the back of the horn and will cut and install some ¾" plywood after I apply some quarter sawn oak veneer to it. The 8-9 sounds terrific and I'm looking forward to posting photos after I'm done.

Did you get the left wing molding that I sent last week?

Yes I did and it fit beautifully. I’ll be sending detailed photos of the entire result when I finish.

Bruce, sounds great! and you're going a lot faster than I am on mine! I got two Army Navy Edison machines that got in the way!
