No doubt Andy (Orchorsol) will be able to identify this model with it's strangely asymmetric motor board layout.

Thank you Roger, yes, I saw this one with interest - I have a near identical one myself, but I don't know of any name or number for this model! Mine has slight issues with its tonearm pivot, which is a complicated affair. As well as the tonearm being made of wood, oddly shaped and having a surprisingly thin wall section, there is a spring counterbalance at the base, and where it mounts onto the motorboard (and mates with the internal horn below) there is an unusual leather seal.

I've had mine playing enough to hear that the sound is really quite good - as you would expect: an Orchorsol beat an early EMG into second place in The Gramophone magazine's competition in 1924.

In a sense, actually I have two of these... The reason I'm "Orchorsol" on here is because the first EMG I bought, although I already had an Expert Junior, is an original conversion of another example of this same type of Orchorsol gramophone (for some years EMG offered a service of converting good quality older gramophone cabinets to their own external horn models). With this one, given the history, they must have enjoyed the irony in the workshop!

Quite by chance I took a photo of it earlier today, along with an Expert Senior which is visiting here at present. Here they are, glowering at each other.

Appears to have sold for £100. A nice buy if one has room for such a large machine.

There was another one floating around on Facebook marketplace recently too, if it were a bit nearer I would have been sorely tempted

Now an Orchorsol portable has turned up for sale. Although not exactly rare, these aren't all that common, and are good performers. As with the cabinet model above, the soundboxes (with or without their compression-adjustable lifebelt fitting) are desirable too.
