Factory or decorated?

Post by Django »

I saw this Victrola and wondered if the factory every did anything like this. It looks too good to be a home done embellishment, but I am not expert enough to determine that.

You almost need to see the decal on the inside of the lid. If it was decorated by Victor and the inside was painted, the decal would have been applied over the decorated finish. If it was post factory decorated the inside could have been left in its factory finish. I've also seen the inside of the lid painted with the paint brought up to the edge of the decal.

I love decorated finishes both factory and post factory varieties. I think Victor offered decoration to the prestigious models and was also flexible and would provide what a customer wanted for a price. I have a Victrola XI with post factory Asian finish. It would be interesting to know how mush that cost the owner. It would also be interesting to know what Victor wold charge to decorate a lesser model like an XI. Has anyone seen a modest Victrola like an XI with a factory decorated finish?

If anyone has a receipt for a special post factory finish I'd love to see a copy in a post.

Thanks, Jerry Blais

I have a VV-210 in my collection which I assume was custom decorated after leaving Victor. The interior decoration is quite different from the exterior and the Victor decal is on the original wood finish and is just surrounded by the painted finish. Nonetheless, the exterior decoration is attractive and in good condition.

Bill,
What a wonderful machine. It's my observation that the outside and inside of an Asian themed machine is different, at lease in color.. The clue that the decoration was done post Victor is the very creative way it was painted around the decal. Outstanding!
