Shout Out to Rich Gordon's Cylinder Packaging

Post by phonogfp »

I didn't know where else to put this, but careful packing like this deserves to be applauded (especially in light of the Eagle I received a week ago!).

I bought a cylinder record from Rich Gordon, and it arrived today. It's 42 degrees here in Western New York State this morning, so I wanted to remove the cylinder box unopened to allow it to slowly come up to room temperature. (By the way, had this been a wax Amberol, I'd have left the entire box unopened for 24 hours.) Here's what I encountered:
Shipping.JPG
1) The Priority Mail box was securely taped, with an extra piece of cardboard under the seam where a knife or scissors would be used to open it.

2) The box was full of shredded paper.

3) Centered in the shredded paper was a 4" diameter plastic tube wrapped in a couple of layers of bubble wrap and shrink wrap.

4) Inside the plastic tube was the cylinder, wrapped first in shrink wrap to protect the label, then bubble wrap.

5) Inside the cylinder box, the record was supported by a folded paper towel carefully but firmly inserted inside.

This package could have thrown off a building without damaging the record, much less the record box.

My thanks go out to Rich! Don't hesitate to purchase cylinder records from him.

Rich is one of the people who truly "gets it". I've used his PVC tube trick when shipping rare cylinders more than once.

James/Roaring20s is another seriously good packer. His packages would survive a minor nuclear holocaust without issue!

Thanks, Scott. The cylinder is a typical Columbia brown wax, but I didn't have an example of that box.

George-

Excellent addition...Congrats on your rare box. Here's a picture of my box next to my H&S cased Eagle.

P.S. Nice packing Rich.
