That overhang applies to the geometry of EMG and Expert tonearms, but will be wrong for most others...

Andy.

I seem to have overlooked the obvious !!

As I see it, whilst this overhang is permissible on any machine, it only applies at the end of the record the importance being the needle arc track during playing. Obviously the EMG engineers were particular where they placed the tone arm pivot point relative to the spindle in order to provide if possible a continuous tracking error of less than about 17 degrees where record damage is thought to begin. The "end" position of about ½ inch overhang was considered to be satisfactory.

At least this "grip" device only cost me £7 including the tin and, the somewhat hilarious paper insert extoling the virtues of "medicinal" advantages of using it on your gramophone...
