Ceramic Phonograph - Gramophone Coasters

Post by Valecnik »

Some years back a German friend of mine gave me these ceramic coasters as a gift. He got them in an antique shop somewhere near Munich.

They are not exactly historically correct but I like them and eventually used them for among other things, the wallpaper on my website.

I'm guessing they are later, probably from the 50s or 60s but would invite any comment from someone who might know better.

They are all the same size. The last one just scanned larger for some reason... :monkey:

Is there a manufacturers stamp on the underside of the coasters?
They are great items. I can imagine the look I'd get from friends if I laid one down in front of them with a drink. I already get picked on occasionally because of my obscession

The backsides are covered with a light blue, somewhat dirty, felt. I don't really want to remove it to check. There are no visible markings other than those you see in the pictures...

I've actually got 11 of them but only 7 different phonos pictured. The remainder are duplicates.

They look like Delftware to me (from Holland), but many factories reproduced Delft- manly in Germany & Austria AFAIK, and mainly from the 1960s until now. Without a factory mark, it may be impossible to accurately identify & date them. Even with one, some marks were used unchanged for many years, so accurate dating might only narrow it down to a certain decade or two.

If one could ascertain the origin perhaps the original patterns would be available and more could be made up. Wouldn't it be cool to tile a bathroom with them? My wife would like that...
