A needle in a haystack request...

I realize I may be looking for a needle in a haystack, but hey, it never hurts to ask... especially with the well-educated group all of you seem to be.

I have no idea as to which label this may or may not have ever been produced on, but I was hoping somebody might be on the lookout for the following (VG+ or better) recording for me:

MOZART - CONCERTO FOR CLARINET AND ORCHESTRA IN A MAJOR. K. 622

As I am still new to this arena, the best that I could dig up was a rather oblique reference to a Decca/Reginald Kell recording.

I realize this may be a longshot, but I figure my chances of finding a lead are far better here than by randomly searching around online.

I'm really not sure what you are looking for here. The current catalog of CDs at Archivmusic shows 120 versions of this very popular concerto in print today, and it was recorded numerous times in 78 days too. There are two versions listed with Kell (and probably more out of print), one from 1950 in a box set of CDs from DG, the other a remastering on Testament. Are you looking for acoustic or early electric versions? Particular artists or conductors?

My apologies for not being more specific, a hazard of being new to this arena. At this point I would just be happy to find a VG+ acoustic 78; if they are, in fact, plentiful, I may be more choosy regarding artist/composer.

Reginald Kell recorded the complete work first in 1940, as far as I can tell (so not acoustic). Charles Draper had a complete recording on Brunswick in 1929, but this also was electric. Draper's 1925 recording of the Mozart clarinet quintet was acoustic, I have this one. I'll check around, some part of the clarinet concerto may be available on acoustics.

The Gramophone Shop Encyclopedia ( 1936) notes that the Brunswick set was not available by that time. But the work was also done, by Haydn Draper, for the Columbia History of Music set in the mid 30's but only the second movement on DB 834 in Volume 3 of the set. I've only seen a set once: comprising about 10 blue 12 inch albums. Certainly not common.

So, it sounds like perhaps the haystack is getting larger again...

I finally dug out my (way overpriced) discography "The Orchestra on Record 1896-1926" which covers most acoustic classical recordings, and found to my surprise that only one listing is there for the Mozart K622 Clarinet Concerto, the Adagio (2nd movement) with Philipp Dreisbach and "orchestra" on a 1922 Polydor 15958. So you will have to settle for one of the electric versions mentioned above.
