Question On Unusual Diamond Disc Reproducer

Post by startgroove »

Greetings boys and girls! We've had the reproducer for years and recently, in a conversation with a fellow collector, the question came up about why it has a collar above the diaphragm. It also has a larger than normal weight and it is serial number LD 2092. Can anyone identify? Cheers, Russie

Looks like a Dance rep. Dance reps. have a collar above the diaphragm with three bolts.

Yes - that's a "Dance" Reproducer.

What is a Dance Reproducer? I can't find a way to even make it wiggle! Cheers, Russie

It was an attempt to add volume to the regular reproducer by spring loading the diaphragm and stylus bar. It was only available as an add-on, no machine ever came with it. The three screws on the "top" were required so that the spring on top of the diaphragm could be attached to a bar mounted in the throat.

How successful this attempt was is a matter of opinion. You can search the board for more info.

Just for fun, here are a couple of Dance promotionals I came across in Talking Machine World some time ago while doing research on the Long Playing Consoles and Edisonics. Maybe it'll help for you to have a better idea of what you have.

Best,
Fran

When you are ready to hear the Dance reproducer at its original potential, contact me for a Figure6 DANCE diaphragm. This eliminates the spring suspended diaphragm...which always made a “tinky” noise.
