Did the Victor E have a rubber flange?
I’m in the process of restoring my first phonograph, a Victor E. While looking up tutorials on how to rebuild the reproducer, each one mentions the importance of the rubber flange, but I can’t even find a place to screw one in on mine. Did this model not have one or am I missing a piece that goes before the flange?

Also another question: is penetrating oil ok to use on the screws for this thing? I don’t want to just try to unscrew these 116 year old screws without some kind of lubricant

Good question. The Exhibition was used for both front mount machines like yours as well as the rear mount machines. The rubber flange refers to an Exhibition used on a rear mount machine. Yours does not have the rubber flange. Keep those questions coming.

Another good question. Those little Exhibition screws can be difficult. I'd suggest:
1 - Use penetrating oil and let the Exhibition sit overnight.
2- Loosen the screws with screwdriver that's the correct size and in good shape.
3 - If they don't come free I like to use a heat gun. It's like a hair dryer that's been on steroids. Wear gloves and heat the screw and surrounding area. The heat will not damage the mica diaphragm and the gaskets are what you're replacing.
If other have good suggestions, let's hear them.

The rubber flange is a rubber tube inside the horn connector on this machine. The reproducer tube slides into it. Your Exibition reproducer is referred to as a "long throat" model.

Oh yeah I see it now, crumbling and falling apart inside my horn. Any idea where I can get a new one?phonojim wrote:The rubber flange is a rubber tube inside the horn connector on this machine. The reproducer tube slides into it. Your Exibition reproducer is referred to as a "long throat" model.

If you can't find an exact replica, it might be possible to take a short length of the soft rubber tubing used for cylinder horn connectors, and slide that over the reproducer neck.LtFrenchFries wrote:Oh yeah I see it now, crumbling and falling apart inside my horn. Search for Ron Sitko in the Links section. He sells these rubber tubes. He is closed until January.
