HELP WITH ALVARA ORTHOPHONIC

Post by Pete Stratford »

I am trying to help a friend get his Alvara VV 4-90 working. The Pot metal back bracket was broken and had a home repair made
to it. You will notice that the back bracket is a two piece affair. The larger outer flange is tin or steel, while the inner
piece that holds the tone arm is pot metal. Does anyone know if they are reproducing the part of the back bracket that holds the tone arm?

Thanks
Pete

I'd first contact Ron Sitko for a reproduction replacement. There are different sizes so he'll need your measurements.

The VV 4-90 requires the 2-¾" tone arm overhang bracket.

I would highly recommend the brackets that Justin makes and sells on eBay. The quality is top of the line, the cost is lower than elsewhere, the shipping is less, and he does not charge any "handling fees".

Here is the eBay link as of January 3, 2020: https://www.ebay.com/itm/2-3-4-Orthopho ... 3699639858

I believe that the brackets that Justin sells are identical to the ones sold by the Smiths before they retired from the business. Like Walt said, they are excellent. I have several I bought from the Smiths years ago.

Unfortunately, often the original pot metal bracket has swollen, so removing the old bracket from the steel base requires breaking or chipping the bracket out. You may have to repaint or touch up the base if it gets scratched in the process of removing the bracket.
