Edison Opera or early Amberola oil hole plugs

Post by phonopal »

Could anyone please provide me with the exact dimensions of the oil hole brass plugs that originally came with the Edison Opera or the early Amberolas, for I'm looking to have some new ones made?

The top part of these brass plugs can be seen in the first photo included here: http://forum.talkingmachine.info/viewto ... =2&t=32718

Any additional photo would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

There was someone selling repros on eBay not long ago, but I don't know if they still are. They were something like $10 each so I didn't buy any for my 1A. I'd love to get a set one day.

possibly if you could contact this guy he would sell you a couple,, doesn't look like rocket science but you need the right tools.

would a brass wood screw work with the head filed as a temporary fix??

seems like you could chuck it in a simple drill press and do a decent job

Back in the 1980s Wendell Moore used to advertise these regularly. It would be great if someone were to pick up where he left off and make replicas available again, even if for more than 75c. ;)

I'd happily buy sets for my Opera and Amberola 1A.

I have an original that Wendell gave me many years ago. A machinist, formerly living in Bakersfield, CA, made exact reproductions that Wendell was selling.

I located that machinist, now living in the eastern US, and had some more made, keeping about 10 if I remember correctly. As stated earlier
in this thread, he offered some on eBay a few months ago.

I’ll contact him again to enquire as to availability and price.

Small world. The eBay listing wasn't clear at all as to how many that $10 would buy and I didn't ask because at the time I didn't have the $$$ to spare anyway. Like I said above, I'd certainly like to get a set for my 1A.

Could someone please post a photo of the plugs? I have never seen them, in fact did not know they existed.

Thanks everyone for the tips and thanks to 'fmblizz' for the link! I ended up contacting Brett, the guy on the YouTube video who also happens to be forum member 'cheryla'. He is willing to manufacture some new pieces for me. I certainly hope that he'll also be willing to offer additional pieces to anyone else who'd be interested in getting a set as well.

I make the exact copy of the originals for $10 each plus $5 s/h in US per order . I am the machinist out of Bakersfield, now living in the South. My Opera had one original, originally they came with them, and my old friend Ray Phillips from California suggested I start making them.
