Credenza dashpot screw

Post by BillH_NJ »

One of the dashpots on a Credenza I have is missing the adjustment screw on the bottom. Does anyone know what size the screw is and whether I would be likely to find a replacement for it somewhere? The other side does control how the lid closes so it does not drop too quickly, but I can only adjust one side.

Thanks,
Bill

What exactly is missing? Just the screw or the whole assembly consisting of the screw, the knurled nut, 2 springs, a seat and ball bearing?

Note there is a stud on top of the screw that holds the springs in place. You are not going to find a specialty part like this at a hardware store -- not even a "real" HW store. The screw appears to be ⅜ inch in diameter, but it does not appear to be the normal 16 or 24 TPI.

You could contact one of the antique phono parts suppliers listed in the Links subforum or watch for someone parting out a Credenza either on ebay or TMF Yankee Trader. You could post a Wanted ad on the Yankee Trader. You may have to buy 2 complete dashpots. But that may be cheaper than buying just the screw from a specialty phono parts supplier. Good luck. :clover:

I didn’t remove and disassemble the dashpot so I’m not sure if the springs and seat are missing. I will have to remove the back again and look more closely, but I have a feeling that I will need to replace the whole dashpot. As I said, the other one is fine and actually can be adjusted to slow the closing of the lid (although that is obviously not a good long-term solution).
