It's been a good month!

Post by Mormon S »

This month of collecting has been unusually kind to me. Now that my good run of finds has come to an end, I probably wont be getting anything until Union. I have enough project now to keep busy busy the entire summer.

We drove 6 hours to DC and stayed overnight to meet Brad (outune) from here on the forum, and pick up a H&S under glass cabinet. On the way back we stopped by an antique shop and found a Hendryx bird hanger, which works beautifully as a horn crane. It was a great coincidence, I started looking for the circular hendryx model about a month ago, and it was right there for relatively cheap.

The week after I found a fireside with an early full brass horn. It seems it was restored quite a long time ago, but the finish was an attempt at a green oak, and just looks like a blotchy black-green mess. (Sorry if this is someone's restoration from long ago ) The end of the brass horn also had its end replaced with an ill-fitting brass pipe. That being said, I think it will end up looking really nice once redone, and I will match it with a cygnet horn that I'm wood graining.

Among other things, I also found a nice batch of cylinders and a brass horn with a handsome patina.

Very nice Martin! That H&S cabinet looks gorgeous. What're you going to put in it?

Cheers,
Fran

Thanks Fran. Brad said that the cabinet marched identically with one that carried a home. The top is a repro because someone replace the original with a marble top, so I could really cut it to fit any of the original options. I will probably just go with a home.

It depends where the crank hole is ..,. There is a different spot between home, standard and Columbia machines.

Nice haul--I'm a bit late to the party but these are some seriously impressive phonographs.

What's the plan on the Fireside? I can't tell if that decal is stock or replica. It still is a nice little machine. I very much like my Fireside but it hasn't run for a while as the reproducer is still out of service.

Thanks Charles. The fireside is going through a full restoration. The bed plate is in quite terrible shape, and someone slathered over the original shellac finish with a very dark green-black glaze/paint and applied a decal over it. Expect a thread on it in the future, out of the the many projects I've pilled onto myself, The fireside will be first and I'll have the whole summer to continue knocking out the rest.

The script "Edson" decal is an early replacement. If you blow up the photo and look carefully you'll see the dot on the "I" in Edison is curved over the top of the dot. It's a 1980s replacement.
