Edison Standard A (New Case) and Standard Model B question

Edison Standard Model A (New Case) and Standard Model B question...

I'm working on a customer's machine...which is a Edison Standard Model A (New Case)...but its lower gears are shot...worn, broken teeth, etc.

Do both of the machines above use the same lower gears?!??

Just curious. I would not be surprised if they do, but I'm looking for a definitive answer...

Before I started swapping parts from Model B Standard.... I thought that I'd ask.

Just checked the Spotter's Guide to the Edison Standard on APS, and there is no mention of changes to the motor gearing after 1901.

I assume that if there were, they would have mentioned it.

You would have to change the crank shaft because one is threaded and one is slotted. If you can line up the screw holes in the gear motor it may work. Several years ago I was playing around with motors and they seemed to swap out with a lot of work. The B motor is a better motor than the A motor but putting the B motor on the A machine probably will have clearance problems. The spring motor is bigger on the B machine I believe and may cause problems . I forgot if the big spring gears need to be changed too. They will have to match the motor gear. I think it is easier to replace the item with a duplicate one. Tom

Bill - I think it would be a mistake to consider the "Spotter's Guide" complete or infallible. ;) I'm sure the reason I didn't mention it was that it never occurred to me that they might be different. Tom's point is very well taken as to the different crank shaft types. I strongly suspect the gears to be the same as the model B, but I am always suspicious when it comes to variations over the course of production. Contacting George Vollema for the proper parts will undoubtedly answer the question one way or the other.
