Could be a cheap and nasty repro?
I saw a while back the crapophone companies had added portables and upright to their list of junk.
Perhaps this is one?

That one's way too nice to be the same model of replica that we were looking at a few months ago! Definitely unusual; I don't think it's USA-made. Probably a foreign machine from HMV instead of Victor.

The plating is too good to be anything but the real deal. It's a beautiful machine--but it's not a 102, because there is not a needle tray in the corners (a feature so distinctive even Russian copies included it) and the square lids to the needle cups look like late 1930s-1940s Art Deco bath fixtures instead of gramophone parts. It's a neat little machine--with all that chrome I'd put it in the collection, but I'd want to have that turntable off & look round for a model & serial first.

Thanks Nostalgia for finding more interesting phonographs. Your interest in portables helps round things out--I & a lot of collectors really enjoy the horn machines & floor models but in America there were not as many high-grade portables made as there apparently were in England...my English portable (Columbia of course) is my best-sounding machine but it came from one of our own, and it's unlikely that I'd find another one in a thrift store or a local antique shop. So thank you!

It looks Asian, maybe made by Japanese Victor.

Sorry, to someone of you guys in here, this was actually a small test, to decide if this was the real deal, and also arise some interest in this unique gramophone. And...Carlos V, kudos, you nailed it, it is a Japanese Victor!
What do we know about Japanese Victors, are they listed somewhere?
I was able to retrieve photos from the production of the Nippon (Japan) Columbia gramophones yesterday evening, that is now uploaded to the British and European section on the forum, since we there lately in different threads discussed quite a lot Japan made Columbias.

The name of this lovely red Victor is by the way: Victor J2-8
And I have more photos of Japan made Victors, if you have interest, but if they are listed on a general Victor website, I will of course not spam you here with these photos. I could however not find this particular model on the VictorVictrola website, so that is why I decided to upload the photo here.;)

Great, Soundgen:) I understand from your post that you sold it, or maybe just had it for repair?
I upload another one...Model J2-10,,
No, one more...Model J2-12,,that actually looks VERY similar to the one you had, Soundgen.
I actually sit here with photos of more than 60! Japan Victor/Victrolas...portables, floor models, tabletops...
I did not get access to only Columbia models.

As luck would have it, my daughter's Japanese language tutor was here when I saw your photos of the "donation" machine. I printed out the text and showed it to him. He said the characters are very old-fashioned, in some cases not used today, and that the gist of the text inside the lid is that the proceeds will be donated--but he thought to the army. He said it refers to the Pacific war and bears a 1943 date. He said the text on the lid marks it as a donation machine.
