"Late" Victor Type "B" Ad ???

Post by Zwebie »

Does anyone have a picture of an ad showing the "late" Victor "dolphin cased" Type "B".

Either an Ad or Catalog description.

Curious, Bob S.

I'm also hoping a member can post such an ad or catalog listing. Never seen one myself. I had no idea the other styles of Type B cases were offered later until Bob mentioned this in a previous thread. Always assumed they were all offered at the same time. Were they offered for the same price..?

Was this deduced by serial numbers of the few existing models ?.

I searched the internet and my archives and made several observations:
The "early" ERJ "Fleur-de-lis" B's have low serial numbers.
The VTM "Fleur-de-lis" B's have low serial numbers that started at at least #13347.
The VTM "Dolphin" B's always have higher #'s than the "Fleur-de-lis" B's

This is just my observations. Possibly some others can add additional info.

Bob, your serial number hypothesis makes sense. Did Victor offer the other "later" styles as a way to boost sales of an already archaic model...?. After all, who would want one with far better models available by this time...??.

Here is an early 1901 ERJ catalog (courtesy of Allen K) shows the Type B with the "Fleur de Lis" embellishments.

Bob,
That is very interesting information and a great hypothesis. I checked my VTM Dolphin B and it also has a fairly high serial number as predicted by your theory. It would seem that the dolphin version may have been a late addition after changing to VTM. I wonder if there are any dolphin B machines with a ERJ plate out there. It would be great to see the ID tags of all those B machines out there both VTM and ERJ, Dolpin and Fleur De Lis to see if your theory holds true. I wonder if the Dolphin and Fleur De Lis were offered simultaneously or if the Dolphin replaces the Fleur De Lis late in the run.

So did Victor actually sell 20,000+ units (three variations) of the Type B ....?. Given their rarity today, it would seem unlikely. Unfortunately, no sales figures survive for these early models.
Do we know any of the "rosette" embellished version serial numbers..??. It would be interesting to see if that variation also has a 20K range serial number. Maybe a member can add one of those.

For reference, my Victor-tagged fleur-de-lys version is # 13719.

Something I noticed with the dolphin case posted in the thread . It retains the early style brake even though the serial number is in the 20K range. As far as I know, the later Type B's came with a later style cannon brake in order to allow playing 8" & 10" records. Does anyone know when this brake change occurred...?.
Since mine is in the early 8K range, it has the early style bolt brake.

I agree that all the "dolphin" cased Victor B's should have the later brake as pictured.

The seller in the previous thread stated that the brake was a reproduction.
