The Japanese Sandman / Avalon Art Hickman's Orchestra 1920

Post by melvind »

This is a strange record from 1920. Both sides are medleys. But, the weird thing is that one side is The Japanese Sandman with Avalon injected in the middle. The other side is Avalon with The Japanese Sandman injected in. It makes me wonder why, but kind of a fun little record. The center hole isn't really in the center so the stylus has to wobble around a bit while playing it. You can hear some of that when you listen. So, for you acoustic lovers here is The Japanese Sandman and Avalon times 2!

Is that a Saw being played in Avalon? Maybe a slide whistle? What do you think?

It's a slide whistle. Dance band records of this period used slide whistles sometimes.

Paul Whiteman's version has one too.

Thanks for the slide whistle info. What a strange thing to have in a jazz/dance band. I am glad it went away as things moved forward.

I've noticed that introducing other songs into fox trots was a common thing back then, but I've never seen a record that did a flip flop like this one. I think I have a Japanese Sandman by Paul Whiteman on Victor Scroll that interpolates the theme from The Mikado!
