IS THIS A TRUE 7" RECORD CARRYING CASE??

Post by Phonotom »

Hi, I bought this on a trip to Denver a while back. It looked to me to be a 7" record carrying case? When I got it , it was gutted. I had Tim Fizer redo the interior. What are your thoughts? 7" records fit perfectly in it. Please give me your thoughts

Looks nice ... but what exactly did Tim do??? Were any slats (or slots, top and/or bottom, to accept slats) present when you got the box? I would agree, it looks very convincing now --- but what did the interior look like before Tim worked his magic? Can you post some pics of the pre-Fizer interior please?

Thanks,
Bob

Here are a couple pre pictures. There was evidence that there was something fastened inside.

Same subject, different case.

It was being sold as "Antique Wooden Box dovetail Berliners gramophone Record Filing Box Late 1800’s"

The question is, is it real?

Bob,
To answer your question....the box that just sold on Ebay is in fact original (although I don't think Berliner made) and is the less expensive "Poplar" made box. There is also an Oak version that was a bit more expensive.

Victor also offer four boxes like these.....two 7" Oak & Poplar and two 10" Oak & Poplar.

Bob-

Yes, that's real. Don't think it's a Berliner specific box however. I always thought of this type as a carrying case for 7" records available thru the Hawthorne and Sheble catalog or similar supplier.

Bob,

I'll add my voice to Wayne and Mark in confirming that the box you show is authentic. I have examples just like it - including oak and poplar versions with Victor decals on the lids.

I'd be interested in seeing the Victor decals if that's possible. Is it like the one from the horns?
