Handel: The Messiah: “Rejoice Greatly” by Anna Case 1922

Post by melvind »

Anna Case proves her talent on this very well sung version of Rejoice Greatly. Coloratura vocal fireworks! Fun to hear and it shows what a great singer she really was.

There are a few low frequency bump sounds in various places in the record, but I don't think it takes away from the performance. There is no obvious visual damage to the record, so I am assuming the bumps are from pressing issues. Also, the record is off center and the stylus has to move around a bit while playing the record.

Lovely, polished production as usual. Thanks for posting!

I included this recording in my "Edison Messiah" video last Christmas (available embedded in a related article here https://www.tnt-audio.com/vintage/edison_messiah_e.html). It starts at 8 minutes in. My video work can't begin to claim the polish of yours, but comparing the audio is interesting, as my copy has no sign of those bumps and thumps, at least as played with an unrestored Edisonic reproducer. What's your matrix number? Mine is 8480-B-3-2. If your disc is from a different take, perhaps it's a peculiarity of one of Edison's masters for that selection.

Lovely performance and transfer. While early orchestrations are always strange, this one comes across as particularly un-Handelian even if it is a bit of fun. She sounds a bit rushed through the coloratura passages but always shows her grace and even production. Very nice!

Mine Has Matrix 8480-C-2-2. So the third take. There were 3 on the same day that all seem to have been used according to the DAHR website.
