Every week or so I call my dear friend Guido Severijns in Holland. Many people on this Forum know him from his 40+ years of being a world-wide phonograph dealer. Guido is, among other things, one of the most sincere, honest people that I know. I tell you this because today he related some alarming information.
His 28-year-old daughter, Cassandra, has been suffering from CV for over six weeks. Apparently she will be OK, but even as recently as yesterday she had a relapse and was rushed to the hospital.
I mention this because Guido tells me that young people all over Holland are experiencing these terrible, long-term effects of CV. But rarely, if ever, is this information being told to the general public. The big question is why.
So, it seems that it is not just older people who are at great risk. We have our children and grandchildren to worry about as well. One or two phonograph shows or auctions more or less are not going to look all that important if each and every one of us doesn't do his part to bring the spread to a halt.

Re: Union??
In a sense, the current pandemic reminds me of the Polio situation pre-vaccine. Literally millions of people who got Polio were either asymptomatic or had only mild symptoms, but as we all know, there were many extreme and debilitating cases as well. So it seems to be with COVID-19. You either get a relatively mild (or even asymptomatic) case or a devastating case, with very little in between. Let us just hope a safe, effective vaccine becomes available sooner rather than later.Raphael wrote:Every week or so I call my dear friend Guido Severijns in Holland. And to think otherwise imo is just selfish stupidity.
Until this year, I though 9/11 was the worse thing I'd see in my 54 yrs of life. Then a few weeks ago I literally cried every night for a week as I read the death toll coming from New York, along with numbers from UK, Spain , Italy etc.
And now, over 90,000 Americans dead. This is by far the absolutely saddest think I've ever witnessed, and those numbers are only going to climb.
Over the same time period, yesterday marked the 100th death in Australia which was a sad day for us, so I can only imagine how bad America as a nation must feel.
I hate not having the freedom to travel and do what I want as much as the next guy, and I'd love to see our and your economy open up, but I don't think any of us should be in a hurry to do so.
This thing has effected every person, business and industry on the planet, but we all should be very careful not to move too fast until (if ever) a vaccine or at least safe reliable treatment is found.
This virus is only 6 months old, so there's still so much we need to learn about every aspect of it.
Compared to the AIDS virus, 6 months is like chapter one in a 12 volume encyclopaedia set.
All we really know is this thing spreads super fast, and it can kill people.
I've had 2 heart attacks and a Stoke in the past, so I'm dead if I catch CV, and to say that doesn't worry me would be a lie, but what worries me a hell of a lot more is catching it, and unknowing passing it to someone else, who then passes it, and then someone dies.
Over half our death toll came from 3 things. A cruise ship disembarking before test results came through, and from 2 nurses who went to work, with very mild symptoms, one at a hospital and one at an aged care facility.
If I was one of those nurses, i could not live with the guilt.
So I think the best thing any of us can do is keep up social distancing and hygiene measures, and restrict movement and non essential travel for as long as humanly possible, because that's what's going to keep the people we know, and the people we don't know safest.
*Just wanted to add that I see Jerry's intentions to go to Union as essential travel.
He's obviously committed prior to CV to making several deliveries and exchanges along the way, so he'd be letting a lot of people down by not going.
It's certainly not the same as putting of one person for a couple more months.
Just don't want anyone thinking I'd include him in my selfish stupidity category lol.

Re: Union??
Unfortunate but WISE decision. I look forward to next June with this show AND where ever APS decides to have a show.

I read the Donleys' note. Obviously, they are cancelling the show solely based on the legal consequences, not the health risk. I believe they are still living in the bubble that Raphael mentioned in his earlier post in this thread.

Best regards ... AZ*

Re: Union??
This doesn't make any sense based on State of Illinois own information. Union could have been rescheduled for late July, August, September - why bother waiting till 2021?
The Antique Phonograph Society which is a world wide, non profit organization, has already stated they will have a show in the central United States in 2021. It is THE SHOW TO ENDORSE in 2021 and beyond. I will be there to support APS and the continuing future of our hobby!

Being a Brooklynite originally... I can tell you that the health risk of this is FAR from "minimal". I find it amazing that anyone thinks that way, yet we see it every day.AZ* wrote:I read the Donleys' note. Re: Union??
It DOES seem strange that they are doing it in June 2021, after the APS has informed us that a June 2021 show is already in the works.Ripduf1 wrote:This doesn't make any sense based on State of Illinois own information.
