Sonic performance of Figure 6 diaphragm & Gilmore stylus

Post by JohnM »

Here are two videos of the diaphragm that I invented and perfected in collaboration with Wyatt Markus, installed in an Edisonic reproducer and fitted with a Gilmore diamond stylus by Wyatt.
The links connect to two YouTube videos, one playing an electrical recording, the other an acoustical recording.

Here’s a stock reproducer with original diaphragm and stylus playing the same acoustical disc for comparison:

They both sound great, especially the electrical recording.
How does this Edisonic compare with an original Edisonic reproducer?

It sounds better. The shellac that holds the layers of rice paper in original diaphragms oxidizes and hardens, attenuating the performance characteristics. With a Figure 6 diaphragm, the frequency range is extended, and the narrow band of emphasized frequencies that causes ‘listener fatigue’ is eliminated. The Figure 6 diaphragm is very ‘articulate’ and combined with a perfectly-sized Gilmore stylus, the detail revealed in the recording is amazing. There is very distinct separation between the instruments.

What does the whole retrofit cost?

Thanks,

I would refer you to Wyatt Markus (MicaMonster) on this board. I have no connection to the production or installation of the diaphragms myself.

This is some neat work! That new diaphragm really refreshed the sound of the machine and the new stylus doesn't sound nearly as scratchy as the others.

It's exciting to see innovations that help maintain the hobby over time and promote the great sound made by Edison diamond disk machines.
