SOLD : Edison ICS Amberola 30 w Original Stand - $750

Post by Shawn »

For sale, a great item to add to your collection today!!

Here we have a super example of an Amberola 30. What makes this super, well,

First, it is in outstanding original condition. No veneer issues, original finish, all original parts, great paint.

Second, It plays beautifully, It has a strong stylus, a motor that easily makes it through more than on record, and a great sound.

Third, it is a factory ICS machine. This machine was made for the International Correspondence School by Edison. It has a speed control (not normally found on this late of a machine) to play ICS records, it has the modified model H reproducer and reproducer reducing ring to allow for playing of ICS wax and Amberol records. It also has the full nickel mandrel.

Finally, and this is the best, it has the original Amberola 30 stand. This stand, very seldom found, is especially made for the Amberola 30. Note the indents at the four corners to accommodate the rubber feet on the bottom of the machine. The shelf is perfect for records storage. Made of solid oak, it has original finish, matching the machine. It makes an special Amberola 30 even more elegant, and special.

It is a wonderful set up, hardly, if ever found.

Take a look at the pictures. If the prospective buyer is bothered by the original, slightly tatered grill cloth, I will substitute a different original grill, with correct replacement grill cloth. I have shown this grill in the last picture. It is only available as an original substitute to the original grill shown with the machine.

An outstanding opportunity to add to your collection.

The price is $750.00. I would prefer not to ship this item. Shipping has become expensive and slow! I will ship if asked, at the new owners expense with insurance. It can be picked up in Michigan, or I can deliver it to the planned Stanton Auction in August with prior commitment.

Please contact me at [email protected] with interest.

I think it's a very interesting machine especially with the stand. Please take a moment and explain the unusual reproducer. Also, was the speed reduced and how was that done?

I will see Shawn in the Donley's parking lot in a little over a week. I could get it back to Oregon. But the cancelation of the APS Expo in California makes it difficult to get it headed south from Oregon.

A reproducer setup from an ICS Amberola 30 was offered for sale recently. Here is the thread, with pictures of the modified reproducer.

The ICS amberolas had a ring adaptor, a model H reproducer, and a fitting to attach the model H to the horn (which usually connects to a diamond C). All of the earliest amberola 30's have the speed control in the back of the governor cover, and was later removed as the amberola 30's became cheaper.

I thought these Amberola 30 stands were an aftermarket item not an original Edison offering. I had the name of the company who made them but couldn’t find it right now.

I too would like to know the maker of the stand...

The only one that I know of that sold a specific Stand/Cabinet specifically for the Amberola 30 was Babson Bros. out of Chicago. The majority of them seem to wind up in Pennsylvania though for some strange reason, Maybe they were made there...

This one is a more basic type of "Mission Style" design..

This ICS Amberola 30 is an Amberola 30 3rd Model. A more premium ICS Amberola 30 would be a 1st Model or 2nd Model Amberola 30 ICS Machine. Also one with an ICS "Dealer TAG" or ICS "International Correspondence Schools" tag would also be worth more.. Stange that this machine has no ICS Tag... The majority of machines I have seen have one...but this one apparent does not...which were made as well....Most have the ICS Tags though...so there was no confusion for Dealers or buyers with a regular Amberola 30.

I have seen several ICS Amberola 30 machines but I have never seen one with an ICS celluloid tag. If you have a picture of one of these, please post.

To answer some questions here,

I don't believe I indicated the stand was an Edison product. It is a stand that was manufactured and sold specifically for the Amberola 30. I too seem to remember an advertisement for this type of stand, but have not been able to locate it. It is not the Babson stand. That stand is fully enclosed with shelves and collapsible. Udel and Salter both made simple stands similar to this one, but in all of the catalogs I have, none have this specific cabinet for the Amberola 30. It is only the second time I have seen this type of Amberola 30 stand in 40 years of collecting. I've attached a catalog image of the Babson Simplex cabinet refered to

The stand and the machine were bought together. Because they color match and came together, I have no doubt they sat as is together, in someones home or a school many many years ago.

The reproducer is a modified H reproducer in a reducer ring with a lift assembly unique to the Amberola ICS machine.

To the best of my knowledge, ICS Amberola 30's were not issued with the celluloid ICS tag found on earlier Edison ICS branded products. I've only seen a few ICS Amberola 30's and none have the tag. There are no extra holes anywhere on this machine to indicate it ever had a tag. If someone out there has an Amberola 30 ICS with an original ICS tag, I would imagine I and the whole community here would love to see it.

ICS Amberola 30's are uncommon regardless of early or late. Its a matter of personal opinion only on which (early or late) is more desirable. It is not often collectors who want an excellent example, factory produced, have an opportunity to buy one, early or late, especially with a matching stand.

Here's some more info on the Amberola 30 ICS Machines as per Frow.. and some pics. Looking for more pics as I find them... As stated, Any ICS Machine is a nice unusual find no matter what model or condition...given the parts are usuable.

I think you may be correct on this... I must have been thinking of the earlier Edison machines. I'm trying to dig up some more Amberola 30 ICS pics..
