Victor Electrola Hyperion E763 Talking Machine

Post by MrsTaylor212 »

I'm lucky to have my grandparents' Victor Electrola Hyperion and it's in very good to excellent condition. Does anyone happen to know what the current value is for this remarkable piece of equipment and furniture?

Many thanks.

it must be very old, so pretty valuable. I'd say thousands. or at least 2.50.

LOL Brian...

What does "excellent condition" mean? Yes, the Victor Hyperion is a pretty scarce machine. Does excellent condition refer to the cosmetic shape of the cabinet? ...is it in working condition, both the radio and the phonograph? If you really have a Hyperion it may be difficult to sell because it is difficult to move (being a very large machine) If you have some pictures. that would help.

A few years ago a complete (not screwed with) Hyperion could bring around $2,500. A lot of them were found with the legs cut down or the electronics "modernized". In today's market you may have a problem with finding a buyer for half that amount. It is a very heavy piece and quite a pain to move with electronics still installed.

And when you are done listening to music you can always use it to sink
enemy battleships! :D

It is in working and its original condition, it does weigh a lot (the movers who moved it down 30 stairs and into a van will attest to this), and it's in a climate controlled storage location. I'll post pix later. I'll most likely hold onto it for sentimental reasons, but am just curious about value for insurance purposes.

Mrs Tayler, we always appreciate pictures of machines and especially
those of the less common variety such as yours. Looking forward to seeing
your machine. :)

Would love to, but can't quite figure out how to upload the photo .. it just doesn't seem to allow me to do so. Odd.

I hope if you're using this machine, that you've had it inspected & overhauled by a professional radio serviceman.
Old waxed paper capasitors & other components need to be replaced, or else they can explode, cause a fire, or burn out very expensive transformers etc in the chassis.
You should never power up an old radio without having it checked over first.

The SPU in the Hyperion (AND in the Radiola 32, and Electrola Tuscany, and in the Loudspeaker 104 etc.) was fitted with paper condensers of exceptional quality. I've seldom known one to fail. The RESISTORS in these units are another matter entirely, and I won't get started about the UX-199's!
