Columbia Grafanola Deluxe(Grafanola) version HELP NEEDED

Post by downsouth »

Hey Guys, I recently picked up a Columbia Grafanola Deluxe that needs a little, okay, a lot of help in getting it back to the way it left the factory. Someone thinking that they were helping to get it back up and running added what appears to be a different Columbia motor and drilled a couple extra holes in the case for the new crank. They moved the horn from the right rear to dead center and replaced the original tonearm (now gone) With another Columbia arm now dead center behind the turntable. This rare machine is worthy of restoring so if anyone has this same machine and could provide photos of the horn area, the motorboard and the correct motor and any other areas that might help me I would be VERY appreciative! Thanks in advance.

Regards, Wes

I don’t know how to solve your problem but man, oh man. If I were to finally add a Grafonola machine to my collection it’s definitely going to be the one like this, or something with a unique cabinet that Columbia was famous for. What are some of the more unique Columbia cabinets? I know the gothic cabinet is a sight to see!

What I’m saying is you got a REALLY nice machine! Hope you get it running!

Thanks Steve. Yes these images are very helpful. Was the crankhole in the same location for both the Grafonola and the Reginaphone models? I might need a measurement on yours since mine has three. Did all have the dust ring? I might need a measurement on the base (height wise) of the tonearm. Is the turntable cast or solid and lastly a photo of the motor itself would be great. Thank you thank you! This helps me tremendously.

Beautiful machine. My Deluxe is a later model with a much simplified cabinet design, although it still has gold hardware.

Hello Wes,
The Grafonola Deluxe is a great machine and it's too bad someone did this to yours. Here are some pictures of mine. I have never explored the motor in mine and I'm not quite sure how to get to it, since there doesn't appear to be a separate motor board. I hope this helps a little bit. Call me if you like (971-570-6649).

Thanks Stan, That’s a beautiful Machine. The lid support is the same as on mine. Also, is that a Columbia #5 reproducer on yours?

Wes,
I am not familiar with the names of all the Columbia reproducers. So Here are pictures of it.
