What's This?

Post by Phono+888 »

Hi all,

I just bought this and was wondering if anyone has seen one. The end with the thumb screw fits an Edison reproducer. The other end fit's a 14"horn. I was told it was for a reverse horn set-up. So if you were playing cylinders the horn would face opposite of the front of the phonograph. It does work that way but you need a crane and horn otherwise the weight of a horn with no support will lift the carriage arm.

Thanks, Todd

Maybe it was used in a classroom or any situation where the operator could stand in the normal position and the sound would go towards an audience. In those situations a floor crane and large horn would be ideal. It would be interesting to know the date of the patent. Maybe it dates from the era of the traveling phonograph concerts given in grange halls or other public places.

Thanks Jerry. Just a quick look with a small horn and table crane. On the weekend I'll set it up with a big horn and floor crane for a photo update.
