I tried posting a reply before but somehow it disappeared, Anyhow, it sound like springs of that age would need work if nothing has been done to them. Noise could also come from the bearings or gears, I can understand your reluctance to break anything, although almost everything can be repaired at a price, That said, I have replaced and regreased some springs myself and sent others out for work. I have had some records for what seems like forever that date back to the 1910s and belonged to my grandparents, but got my first phonograph—a Victor VV-100 (which I no longer own)–about 20 years ago. Since then I have gotten about 3 dozen machines and probably 2000 records (and I still feel like a newcomer), so watch out.

What Bill said--they can multiply rapidly.

Due to old age you probably need to fully service the Victrola motor or have it done. The mainspring might be bad in it or beginning to go weak; for sure running in old grease isn't helping it.

One thing you will be glad to know: lots of parts for these are still being produced. A new spring or governor weights, new gaskets and isolators and needle bars, new diaphragms and cranks and whatever--most of what breaks on a Victrola can be pretty easily fixed.

And the VV-IV is the simplest you can get anyway so that should go nicely.

Awesome! Hopefully I’ll have the money tomorrow to send my VIII motor off to him.
