It's a light. They were battery operated. Sold as an aftermarket accessory.

A speed indicator. You put the hole over the turntable spindle and start the motor. When the speed is correct, the little bar on the right becomes level as a result of centripetal force.fonograph wrote:Whats that thing on the turntable?

That speed indicator must be pretty rare, I have never heard of or seen one. Although I suspect that if one got the phonograph magazines you would most likely have seen an ad for it.
