Post by soundgen »

The New Falcon Gold Moulded Record box , NO CYLINDER , RARE ? Pre Edison ?

I've never seen one before and can't find any reference to this make on Google . does it predate Edison Bell Gold Moulded Records / Edison Gold Moulded records or an attempt to copy ? Or did Edison acquire the company ?

I think this must indeed be a rare item. Even the Frank Andrews book "Edison Phonograph : The British Connection" which covers all the known British cylinder manufacturers as well as Edison, makes no mention of it.

Details can be found in the CLPGS Ref Series RS24 "The Pirates" https://www.clpgs.org.uk/reference-series.html or RS6 "The Ultimate Cylinder Handbook" but that is currently out of print, awaiting a 2020 update.

Basically the company, New Falcon Works Ltd., started issuing New Falcon cylinders in early 1905 but had disappeared by 1910.There was a close connection between New Falcon Records and New Century Records. It is believed most, if not all, of the issues were pirated copies from other more reputable manufacturers.

And yes, it is rare

All the best
