Puritans appear at most shows, Stanton’s auctions, etc. They are usually quite reasonable. I agree that their design is unique and beautiful.

Puritan also had their own record label. I bought one at Union a few years back that was full of Puritan records.

I wonder if Puritans were made by Puritans?

The Puritans themselves did enjoy music, but they had very strict differentiations between church and secular music. But since their name implied their intention to purify the Church of England of its "Popish" heritage, the most ironic selections to play on a Puritan phonograph would be Gregorian chants or either Catholic or high-church Anglican hymnody. "Lead, Kindly Light," authored by John Henry Newman, founder of the Oxford movement which attempted to blend Anglicanism & Catholicism temporarily until he himself ended up leaving the Church of England and becoming a Catholic (he was picked for his scholarly abilities to become a cardinal in the Catholic Church, and was recently canonized a saint just last year) would perhaps be the most ironic of the easily found Victor recordings to play on a Puritan record player.

Ah, history: so full of weird stuff ever since they put people in it.

As previously mentioned, Puritans seem to be very reasonably priced, given their unique characteristics and appeal. The one on eBay is priced very fairly. I paid $1800 for the one I got at Union. And the seller (Mike Patella) is 100% cooperative with respect to shipping, a big plus. I’ve been stuck with huge shipping fees when sellers don’t take any interest in the delivery part of the transaction.
