Pooley VTLA On Ebay

Post by phonojim »

I know this auction was mentioned in another thread, but I think it is important enough to be discussed on its own. What do you think it's worth? With a $3K opening bid will there be any chance of finding out? Opinions, please.

My question is has it been mucked with? Isn't the Victor Victrola decal is the wrong one (at least I've never seen a flat top with that decal)(which of course I'm asking has it been refinished). By way of comparison:

Of couse, it is a rather late serial number (flat tops ran until about 2500 according to the Victor-Victrola site), and the decal does show the quality one would expect from an original, so it is possible that it could be a transitional model, which would then make it potentially more valuable?

I've heard through the grape vine that flat tops are going for around $4k, so....if I had the cash, I'd roll the dice on this one....but then again, how many people right now are going to drop even $3?

It appears to be all legit. I had the pleasure of owning another "late" flatop and it had the "newer" decal. There are cabinet concessions at this point, note just above the speaker doors these "late model" Flatops (seems difficult to say that)had started to get simpler designs. On earliest versions there was lots of linear detail amd a needle drawer and then it became more subdude and here it is a basically a Victor XVI L door from the shoulders on down. Decal is correct for that late serial number on a Flatop.

The VTLA I had with serial number 1988 has the decal like the one in the picture but not the one on ebay. To me the one on ebay has been refinished.

Finish on the eBay example appears original, IMCO. The record storage should be boxes, not albums; and should not have letters on the spine of the boxes.

The finish looks original to me. I think it's well worth the $3,000 opening bid. It should have record boxes not albums as John mentioned. Jerry B.
