Looking at a Victor Colony tomorrow

I posted awhile back about looking for a machine for my wife’s aunt who lives near Camden and really wanted a Victrola. I finally found one on Facebook marketplace right down the road from me in Fleetwood PA, for $75. I know it’s not the best orthophonic ever, but I wanted a small ortho floor model that would fit into my little car. Seller says the reproducer needs a rebuild (I have a spare!), but otherwise everything is fine, and the cabinet is very nice. It doesn’t seem like there’s a lot to go wrong. Single spring, no auto brake. We shall see. We’re both pretty excited!

The Colony is somewhat uncommon. This one also has the self-supporting tonearm, so you don't have to worry about replacing the pot metal support brackets that are so commonly seen broken.

Oh thanks for that info. I’ve never even seen ANY Victor ortho cabinet model in person.

Bring some Victor scrolls (or equivalent) with you and some fresh needles. The odds are good that all they have are red label Columbias and a single needle that's been in use since 1947.

As noted, the Colony is a machine not often found. It is essentially a Consolette (4-3) with record storage. And yes, not having that dastardly pot metal bracket is a big plus.
That said, I have a 4-3 with a rebuilt reproducer, and the sound will surprise you. Mostly highs and midrange, not a lot of bass, but still a find-sounding machine. Let us know how you make out.

I definitely will. It’s really fun to be able to do this for a relative (my aunt asked me one day, “Do you think you could find me a Victrola?”). I’d probably do it for anybody who asked me, it’s just nice to share the joy, and maybe light a fire!

As noted, the output is virtually identical to the Consolette (as well as the early Granada) which used the same horn.

I think that sounds pretty great, certainly better than anything I have, so it will be a real treat to hear!

My aunt has had a place of honor ready and waiting, beside the fireplace, with a vaulted ceiling. I think she’ll be amazed with this.

It's home safely. So small and cute, I love it! My reproducer isn't quite tight enough on the arm, although it's tight on all of my HMV machines. I gotta figure that out. Also, can anyone tell me how to lift up the motor board (Victor NOOB)? Oh, and what is the little metal piece for behind the needle cups?
