The oak looks great (as does the mahogany)! I love the couple of L-doors that I have, I found my mahogany VTLA for $150 last year with 8 boxes, only missing the 10” H and J (although it does have an extra A so there is only one empty space). I need to glue a bit of loose veneer as well, but the finish is cleaning up nicely. It is not nearly as dramatic as your oak XVI though.

I have another one in inventory but am in no hurry to restore it, have 2 17s and a regular 16 ahead of it. I also found the VTLA motor difficult, had trouble with the springs. I just finished restoring an 18 that took 3 months to do, hope to reassemble after the finish cures and can be rubbed out. Jerry, the hardware on your L door looks amazing, did you polish it or re-plate or did it come that way?

Jon,

The gold came just as you see it. No polishing done. It's nearly perfect.

Wes, would love to see a pic of your Flemish L door, any chance of that?

Beautiful!

Seeing yours has me pretty much convinced mine must be fumed oak instead of flemish. Especially the finish inside the lid. Thanks for posting the pictures of it.

Thanks, James. That was a real education. I had NO idea there were so many variations of an oak finish.

Wow, that Flemish oak finish looks great with the gold hardware, almost looks like something you would see on a contemporary piece of furniture. I do have to admit i like the dark fumed oak, the wood grain showing thru gives it character. I think a fumed oak finish this dark and on an L door is rare, a really nice find.

Looks like Flemish oak, but with an added twist. Not sure what that finish was called.
