Isn't Jerome, AZ considered to be a ghost town?
In 1903, the NEW YORK TIMES declared Jerome “The Wickedest City in the West.”
The town’s fall came shortly after. The copper mining industry abandoned the town of Jerome in 1952 , leaving it completely bankrupt. It became a ghost town inhabited by less than 200 people.

The last of the copper mines closed here in 1953 and the workforce (then 5000) went to other mines that were still open. Jerome’s population dropped to about 100 and many homes and commercial buildings were abandoned, and the town did become a ghost town. In an attempt to revitalize tourism, what was left of the Chamber of Commerce allied with a newly-formed Historical Society and they made plywood cut-outs of ghosts with comical word balloons and placed them around town and began to promote the ‘ghost town’ angle. The residents called themselves ‘spooks’. Now, close to 70 years later, the town still trades on the whole ghost town image, but that has been twisted to mean that the town is haunted. There are two ghost tour companies and the town has been featured in any number of paranormal television shows. Economically, the town is no longer a ‘ghost town’. There are waiting lists to rent commercial space, the average price of a home is $620,000, and it’s hard to find a rental.
