Columbia BF Cylinder Phonograph Gear Issues

Post by CDBPDX »

Just got a nice Columbia BF cylinder phonograph with some gear issues in the motor. The idler gear was missing, so I found a parts motor with the gear I needed and installed it. Cranked up the motor and it played, but there was a horrible 'clanking' going on. Turns out, the gear that engages the pulley shaft had been damaged and was out of round. Fortunately, the parts motor had a good one, so I stuck that on there, too. Last, the big brass gear that drives the governor was warped and wobbled back and forth making a lot of noise. Replaced that and now it runs great! Just a little work to do on the governor and it'll be ready to go. YeeHaa!

Something must have hit this motor really hard, probably it was dropped.
