VICTOR V PROGRESS

Post by Sethallen1973 »

I was blessed to be given a Victor V a few weeks ago from a couple of good friends who are pickers. They found it on a shelf under a lot of junk in an old shed and thought I might like it. Well of course I was excited! It had about 100 years of dirt etc on it, no horn or reproducer , and the finish was gone. I am attaching some pics of the restoration process. Now I am by no means an expert on restoration, but it has been a joy bringing this machine back to life. Was able to purchase a horn and elbow from a guy on the forum. One question I have is, should I repaint the horn or leave it as is?

Nice job... back from the edge... don't paint the horn.

I would clean the horn really well, then polish it with automotive car polish. But, I would NOT refinish it.

Looks terrific! If you look carefully you can almost see the Victor V smiling. :D

What a kind gift from your friend--not only a fun project, but a truly noble sort of phonograph to enjoy. You'll be listening to that one for years and years.

I'd leave the horn as-is; it has still got some shine to it & looks pretty great.

The re-finished job you did looks as good as the original showpieces in the Johnson Victrola Museum; a must-visit stop if you are ever passing through Dover, Delaware.

Great job on the Victor V, we agree with others to clean the horn.

You did such a great job on the cabinet, can you share what stain and finish you

used to get this result?

Thanks,

David & Lerria

I stripped and sanded what was left of the old finish and went back with a light walnut stain, then finished it off with amber shellac. It was to glossy after the shellac so I took 0000 steel wool and lightly went over it then applied butchers wax.
