Edison phonograph Model K Reproducer

Post by Phonosteve »

Good Afternoon All,

I recently purchased a Figure 6 Diaphragm for my Edison Diamond Disc and was wondering if there was an improved version of the standard copper diaphragm for the Model K Reproducer to suit a Fireside Model A?

As always I look forward to your input

Cheers

Steve

The Edison Diamond reproducer diaphragms were made from cork, rice paper, shellac, etc. and some of these materials deteriorate over time. Therefore there was a need to make new diaphragms and thankfully some creative collectors built new diaphragms that are as good or better than the originals ever were. For other diaphragms made of mica, copper, or glass it's a different situation, either the originals are still good or identical replacements are available today. Therefore I am not aware of any serious efforts to build enhanced versions. Of course, someone may have played around with other materials, but probably more to satisfy their own curiosity. Of course I'm always open to be corrected if I missed something.

I'm aware that there are several serious providers of modern diaphragms for phonographs who have investigated by themselves with modern materials, and have a quality product. These I've learned about through this forum, for I'm not a collector of phonographs myself, but I'm always interested on anything phono related, and these improvements may also be applied to the gramophone diaphragms. Although I suspect that the orthophonic diaphragms, and the Expert/EMG left the bar very high in sound quality, much more than the phonograph, who was commercially killed in favour of the Gramophone pretty early to arrive to these developments. Now the new investigators have surpassed that old bar, and the phonographs you can listen to in yt sound great better than any acoustic machine. Just watch for EDIPHONIC in YouTube and admire the quality of sound available for acoustic machines reengineered with modern materials and ideas. https://youtu.be/jhLjcfswHb0
For better modern diaphragms fitted to Edison reproducers ask in the Traders section. I believe MicaMonster and Don Wilson, among others, produce such modern diaphragms that improve the sound of your phonograph beyond imaginable...
