Will a vv-xi motor fit into a vv-iii?
My vv-iii spring is broken and I have
The opportunity to replace it with a vv-xi.
It looks like it will fit. Any recommendations?
Can a spring be fixed?

Replacing a spring is not necessarily a job for the novice, but it's a routine fix, and a number of forum members can readily do it for you. Don't swap motors; you want to keep your machine original.CatWisk10 wrote:Will a vv-xi motor fit into a vv-iii?

I’m an owner of a VV-111. The 111 uses a 4 spring motor. While the VV-XI uses a 2 spring motor. These motors are pretty easy to find on eBay because other models such as the VV-8-30, VV-8-4, and VV-XVIs made from 1917-1921 used the exact same 4 spring motor as the VV-111.CatWisk10 wrote:Will a vv-xi motor fit into a vv-iii?

These often appear restored on eBay if you’re willing to pay the extra price.
I’ve done this with my VV 8-4 when I restored it 2 years ago. I simply swapped out the bad motor with an already restored one I bought off eBay and it still works great.

I would have the original motor repaired. If you are not comfortable replacing springs you could send the whole motor to a repairman for spring work. Another possibility is to remove the spring barrels and send them in for repair and servicing. You'll find competent repair persons in the "Links" section of our Forum.
Replacing your spring motor with an identical one would be preferable to replacing it with a similar but different motor. You run the risk of having to drill a second crank hole and that's a huge negative. The spring motor you are considering as a replacement has half the spring power of the four spring original motor.
Please repair the original motor.

Maybe George Velloma can help you too. I sent out a VV-VIII motor to him after my botched attempt of taking the motor on it apart.
