Ebay "Bargain"

You've got to be careful emailing dealers with criticism- some of them are quick to report you to Ebay for harassment.

I paid well over $200 for my mahogany one some years back- wouldn't make the mistake now but considering the pleasure I've gotten from it I consider it a good buy.

Well, I suppose if somebody chooses to report me for harassment, that is certainly within their rights to do so. That being said, it is difficult to substantiate harrasment if the emailed facts are true.

However, it has been my experience that most sellers are reluctant to continue to knowingly misrepresent the rarity or market value of an item (whether it was intentional or not) if it means that a buyer can contest the purchase by filing a dispute with Ebay. If the buyer files a successful dispute the seller loses the value of the sale, the shipping costs, and Ebay listing and final value fees (oh yes, and usually a strike on their feedback).

As an occasional seller myself on Ebay, I have always been receptive to emails setting me straight if some of my information in the listing is incorrect, (although I generally steer away from absolutes in my listings unless I can substantiate my claims or an item's provenance).

JMO, and my two cents, for what it's worth...

I suppose you have to give the guy credit for sheer obstinate determination.

By general appearances, it would seem that most every one of his listings is overpriced... I'm guessing he must have pretty hefty listing fees!

On that second ebay listing of the Victrola portable, I wouldn't have thought that removing the internal horn on a portable could make so much difference to the price of shipping?

Shipping Calculated without the Horn is $35.90 to the U.S., and $65.90 with the horn.

MY favorite is the moron who dumps about 25 ill-focused photos of 78's into the classical section of eBay every day. she has just recently stopped calling them vinyl, but she the word that makes me want to cry: "collectible". surely anything I want to collect is "collectible"? Has anyone very listed anything on eBay as "uncollectible"?

But she goes from strength to strength: made-up recording dates (she misdated a Lawrence Tibbet record recently by half a century; and then she lists them as "LP" (not), classical (whether or not; usually the latter), and "opera" (whether or not).

Anyone one to hear my 1903 vinyl 10" LP of Glenn Miller playing "Chattanooga Choo Choo"? It's opera! It's classical! And... it's even collectible!

The seller yet again relists (I mean it has been at least 6 months he's been trying to sell this)....this time at the bargain buy it now price of $2799....

Is ebay having a free listing promotion at the moment? I have to wonder what this guy's motivation is to keep listing this beat the hell up VV-50 for at least half a year? Did he over pay, and is no trying to find a sucker to cover his losses? I'm sure the guy's been bombarded with emails telling him in perfect condition, it might be worth $300, and in his condition, perhaps $100.

Yes, I think they had free listing promotions on eBay for several months on and off now. And to understand his motivation you only have to read the description:

"...I am never afraid to ask too much for the one best of my prize collectibles. It is extremely rare & very old I think and maybe you will love it too."

If you "think" something may be extremely rare and very old, then of course you cannot ask too much for this best of your prized collectibles.

"...I am never afraid to ask too much for the one best of my prize collectibles. It is extremely rare & very old I think and maybe you will love it too."

If you "think" something may be extremely rare and very old, then of course you cannot ask too much for this best of your prized collectibles.

I guess it relates back to the discussion about the Victrola on Pawn Stars. Some people feel free to pull a number out of the air because they think it's old, so it must be worth at least $2k.

However, I doubt this guy is as clueless as the lady on Pawn Stars was. By now he must know his "prize collectible" isn't worth anywhere near $2k (our own Tinkebell contacted him, and who knows how many others), and is only hoping for a sucker to come along.
