Edison Home Model B Mandrel Removal

Post by KCW »

Hi everyone,

I’m having some trouble removal the mandrel feedscrew apparatus on my Model B Edison Home. I found some videos online about removal the mandrel in different ways, but I don’t think my mandrel comes off in the same way. As far as I can tell the feedscrew articulates with the pull for the leather belt. There are two set screws, which I removed, and I was able to get the pulley off a little, but not all the way. Am I on the right track or does the mandrel come off in some other way? I want to make sure because I don’t want to break the bed plate or any other pieces. I’m installing a 2/4 minute conversion kit, which is why I need to disassemble it. Thank you for the help and photos attached below.

There may be another set screw in the channel of the pulley. The hole may be full of crud, but check the center of that channel.

And don't use 3-In-1 oil - - you'll only make more work for yourself when it gums up. A quality sewing machine oil will give better long-term results.

I've had good success using a heat gun to separate parts that are stuck. Wear some thick gloves, heat, and twist. Good luck.

I'm trying to remember how I did that. I seem to remember using a hammer and a wooden dowel to lightly tap on the shaft (from the gate end) to remove the mandrel itself from the shaft.
