HMV163 in Florida

Post by HMVDevotee »

It's back! I first linked to this machine when it was offered in Sept, 2019. Now it's a real bargain. (Not mine... no connection with seller.) If it weren't a 20 hour road trip with hotel stay in the middle, I'd be on my way.

The outer case appears to have been stripped and refinished. The original colour can be seen on the moulded decoration at the top of the doors and the fretwork on the grille, both areas being difficult for a restorer to strip.

I agree, the finish has been stripped. Nonetheless, for the money, I think it is a great opportunity for one our Victor brethren here in the States to enjoy an HMV re-entrant (assuming the instrument is complete.) You could certainly buy one of the 163's on EbayUK, complete with correct finish, but, in addition to your cost, you'll spend $2,000 crating and shipping something this size and weight... perhaps even more.

These are very good machines, I had an excellent example briefly, I had to sell it due to space limitations in my old flat, I miss it and certainly wouldn't mind another, it has it's correct soundbox, the original grille cloth is in good shape, that price I would consider a good deal in this country, especially with the nipper, stateside it must be a bargain, I'd maybes be tempted to re-refinish it back to its original colour externally, but it should still be a fine performer even as it sits
