New to Me: VV-XVIII

Post by Phono-Phan »

I got a tip from a fellow Forum member about a Victrola XVIII that was for sale. After a six hour round trip, I brought it home. The original picture didn't show the condition very well. The cabinet is very solid and complete. There are no loose veneer areas. But, the finish isn't in the best of condition. This might be a project to tackle once I retire. I have always loved the XVIII models but have never been able to find one that I could afford. It was in a small lake cottage sun porch for over 40 years. The owner lived in Chicago and rarely came up to the cottage. He decided to sell the cottage and asked a neighbor to get rid of everything in it and he only wanted money for this phonograph and a grandfather clock. When we got there, the neighbor already had someone with a huge enclosed trailer full of "stuff". The only thing left inside was the phonograph and clock. I may have to practice on some junk cabinets before I attempt to redo the XVIII.

Great project. Doesn't look like there is much finish on the outside so it should be easy.

I was interested in seeing the back of your machine, since I have noticed some crank models with the rear doors for the electric models. I have 2, one enclosed back and one like yours, I guess Victor had anticipated the wealthier buyer to go for electric--since they probably had electric in their homes.

It's amazing how much damage sun exposure to do to an antique cabinet over time. Since the veneer is intact, I'm sure you will be able to restore it to it's former glory. Congratulations!

Looks splendid! Go slowly and ask our gurus, and you'll end having a marvelous machine. I bid you can already play records on it, that's the first point! Then you'll go with the repairs on the wood, then finishing... Even if has yet its casters in good shape! Congratulations!

Nice find Ken, The look of an Victrola 18 is hard to beat, they are so elegant and graceful. I too have several of those when I retire projects. Larry
