Edison Amberola X

Hello,

I was wondering a few things about the Amberola X. In Frow's cylinder companion book he states there were 4 variations. The first 3 used Gem motors with ongoing changes and then the 4th which most of us call the DX had a Fireside motor. Does anyone have knowledge of serial numbers of when they changed over to the fireside motor? And, also, did they designate the id tag as "X" followed by a D when they did?

I would appreciate any knowledgeable comments.

I can't help with estimating the serial number range for the change-over to the Fireside motor, but mine is #16,297 and the data plate is marked "D X".

All of the Edison Amberola X's I've seen stamped as "X" on the ID plate have the Edison Gem motor and were (and remain) very underpowered (remember this is a 4 minute only phonograph) and most struggle to play through a 4 minute celluloid cylinder. All of the Edison Amberola X's I've seen stamped "D X" on the ID plate have the Edison Fireside motor. No idea when the change from Gem to Fireside motor occurred.
