VERY NICE COLLECTION..LOTS OF PHOTOS

Post by Phototone »

Found this Japanese/Asian site, a collector with some very nice equipment, from music boxes, cylinder player, Orthophonics, Pathé, etc. All very nicely displayed, along with classic hifi gear. Mostly photos, language is not necessary.

Wow, I would agree. I would assume it's Japanese but am not even certain of that. Some great stuff there.

Yea I noticed that too. Looks like the record was pretty poor anyway but it's unfortunate that a person who's got a lot of money invested in this stuff does not understand totally how to use it.

Can someone enlighten me as to what is on the end of the mandrel on that Triumph? Is it a speed indicator or does it just create a pattern when it spins?

That's a stroboscope taped to the end of the mandrel. When revolving under incandescent light from particular voltages, the printed lines will appear to stop rotating at 160 rpm or at whatever speed the strobe is calibrated. These exist for 78rpm discs too. Various voltages used throughout the world will require the proper strobe, of course.

well his site is still up i lost many providers of mp3s of very early japanese records for my digital sound archive in japan after the earthquake and aftermath i fear they are no longer with us
many of the upperclass japanese lived in the suburbs on lower ground they where simply flushed away

i dont hope this guy was one of them

the sunami destroyed some wonderfull collections and the owners will be missed

i hope they R.I.P.

Here's the machine-translated version of the site:

Some of that HMV stuff is pretty awesome. Interesting what they choose to highlight. Looks like a non-collector wrote the captions.

Oh yes you do! During the late 1980's until at least the late 1990's, the biggest buyers of vintage audio were all Japanese! In the UK all of the best stuff that turned up at auction or anything worth buying went to Japan and South Korea. That includes rare and mint condition horn machines (not just HMV exclusively), HMV Lumiere models, EMG's / Expert's but especially HMV re-entrant models. No one else had the money to compete with buyers from the 'Tiger Economies'.

The Japanese especially have a real dedication to this subject and judging by this collectors Hi-Fi systems, he must be one of the SERIOUS audio fanatics. HMV 202's and 3's sit comfortably with EMG's and Magna Planar speaker systems.

BTW does anyone know what the heck that HMV cabinet models is with the BOW FRONT? :o It sits between a mint 203 and 202 - it appears to be slightly smaller than either of those models but whilst being mahogany it has an oak style grille! I've never seen or even heard of this model. What is it? The rarest HMV in existence and it's in Japan!
