I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

It appears to be press fitted so first remove the centre arbor from the spring and barrel, then insert a wooden dowel in the hole off centre so it sits near the edge of the hole in the cover, and strike it with a hammer and it should pop off.

Thanks. Not having trouble getting the spring un-hooked! Any tips? I tried doing the quick turn in reverse.

Remove the gear from the winding shaft, remove the cross pin, and give the shaft a whack with a mallet on the end opposite the cover. This will pop the cover off.

If you give small taps to the arbor from the opposite side, with a soft hammer, the arbor itself should make the lid pop out. Be careful for any washers or something installed between the arbor and the lid inside the barrel. These must be reassembled the same way.
