Edison Home D with mysterious gear

I have an Edison Home model D with a mysterious gear on the 2/4 speed select pulley. I can’t seem to find a use for it as the machine doesn’t appear to have anything connected to it. What is it? Something custom installed by a previous owner?

This would have been part of a repeater on your Home. Obviously the repeater must be gone now. There are probably two empty screw holes on the top bedplate casting where it would have been mounted.

If you don't have the two holes like Larry predicted, it is because your repeater was an add on and not factory installed.
