Group,

#111 Podcast (https://www.buzzsprout.com/1449838) is the Golden Gate's version of the classic college song "Collegiate Shimmy".

Check it out....

Vic

I will.
I find your podcasts delicious... And that personal feature of playing the songs twice ... It's better for memorising.
I never played any record twice. But now... (Will it be my age?) I'm starting to play twice a record I like.
This is my current status. 5000+ 78s. Many I like for the music, the performances... I find something special on them. Yet there are many 78s I simply keep for discographical interests, or by their labels or anything... but the music they contain hasn't anything remarkable. I'm currently replaying my collection and trying to discard those records that don't have anything special in the music... Difficult! But I'm reducing my collection of favourites. Some records go out to the discarded section, with some pity, but they go away. I'm planning to sell them one day... and stay only with those that play well and sound good to my particular taste.
And now I find I'm playing them twice most of times! If only to make sure they fall at one side or the other of the mental boundary I've fixed.
The problem is that this boundary is subjective, and changes from one session to another, depending on the humour l feel that particular day.... the mood I'm in...
A difficult task!
I find myself rescuing records from the discarded pile every now and then, instead of playing the approved ones!
:D :D :D

My collection (not 5000 though) is filled with similar records. I'm having a hard time getting rid of some because of the issues you mentioned. When I start pulling records out to listen to before getting rid of them my "keep" piles become giant and my "get rid of" piles are very small

Inigo and others...

I include two plays of the sound for a number of reasons. One reason is to add some commentary about the song that you may have missed on the first pass. When you hear a song for the first time, you may miss or not understand a reference in the music and that gives me an opportunity to add some fun info so that the listener will understand the song better when they hear it again.

Good to know that you enjoy the Podcasts!

Marc

:D ... and there are some records always going from one pile to the other.... :D ... and just after a few days or weeks, coming back from the other to the one... :D it seems impossible!

I only own a modest collection of Edison records. My favorite band recorded by Edison by far is the Golden Gate Orchestra. I enjoyed hearing Collegiate all cleaned up with excellent software. Marc, your commentary added a lot to my enjoyment of the podcast. I would suggest that you talk about history of the recording at the beginning and share as many insights as possible then play the record one time. It's very easy with the click of the mouse to return to the start of the record and play it again. Very well done and I look forward to the next one. I request that you try and find the single record recorded on Edison by The Charleston Chasers. Oh, how I wish I had that one in my collection. :ugeek:

To the very best of my knowledge, there are no Edisons by the Charleston Chasers - could you be referring to “Toodles” and “Nashville Nightingale” by the Charleston Seven, one of Red Nichols’ first recordings (Edison 51446)? It’s a great recording!

Here is the one I meant. https://youtu.be/cJe7r1rboCs The other side is Stampede, Edison 51854-L
Recorded under the alias Red and Miffs Stompers. Oh, how I wish I owned that record. Both side real toe tappers. Hard to find no doubt because no one would want to sell it.

Ah, I see! They recorded 4 titles for Edison in 1926: “Hurricane”, “Black Bottom Stomp” “The Stampede” and “Alabama Stomp”, three takes of each. They’ve been collected to a commercial CD, beautifully restored: “Red Nichols On Edison 1924-1927” released by Jazz Oracle, label number BDW 8007. It’s easily available on iTunes. It’s well worth tracking down!

What a nice record! I'd love to have it, even on any standard 78! :D
