French pathé machines used to have very weak motors, but those American pathé machines are in another League. How well they play! I'm amazed with those revolver straight tonearms with the big soundbox.... I've seen several of them in yt and here, and the sound powerful and warm! They have good horns too...
The French Pathé machines with weak motors are from the later period, like the table top Diffusors, that will painfully drag down to a halt any record that is not brand new. The earlier production of external horn, table top and cabinet Pathés have robust motors, despite most of them being quite noisy. Like the whole of Pathé production, there is a large variability in the motors utilized, but in general we can say that the larger and most expensive machines carried better motors. I agree on the Heinemann motors: they are great both in quality, robustness and quietness - comparable to the US Brunswick in the top tier of gramophone motors.

Question:
When refinishing the cabinet, I plan to just use "shellac finish and sealer". Should I buy the clear kind or the "amber" variety? Is Zinsser a good brand, or is there another recommendation? I will clean the whole cabinet with denatured alcohol first.

Try posting this question in a new thread. It'll get more attention that way.
